Netball Tournament Sunday 6th June 2010

YWCA Bury juniors entered 8 teams from four age groups into the tournament. Following a glorious Saturday we woke to hammering rain and the prospect of a long, wet, slippy day. Spirits however were high and everyone chipped in to erect the gazebos and Terry ‘project managed’ the whole operation.

The rain continued to fall throughout the morning until eventually it gave up affording all the players the ability to play a more fluid game without the fear of slipping. A great day was had by all.

U11’s

We took 2 teams of under 11’s to their first - not just 7-a-side tournament, but their first 7-a-side games. This was to be a practice for them and they learned so much. The girls were pulled for lots of obstruction due to not having put their arms up before but by the end of the day they certainly knew how far 3ft was!

With 1 team pulling out in group A the green team had a long wait until their first game in the damp conditions. They had a mixed day with some really good skills and overall put up a valiant effort against some strong opposition.

At the end of the day the purple team went through group B as unbeaten group winners. They faced Rochdale B in the semi finals winning 9-2. The final was between Bury and Oldham. At half time Oldham were leading 4-1 and with a straight change over the girls went straight back into the game stronger and more determined to change the deficit. On the final whistle the score was even at 5-5. It was explained to the girls that 2 minutes each way extra time would be played and if the score remained the same the game would automatically go to golden goal. Four minutes past and both teams had chances to score but neither team converted their shots or interceptions were made. Ninety seconds into golden goal Oldham fed into their shooter who shot and scored to take first place.

A fantastic result for YWCA Bury U11’s in their first tournament playing 7-a-side netball. Well done girls we are very proud of you ALL.

U12’s

We are all very proud of the U12s squad this year. 3 tournaments so far....... 2 semi finals and one final, absolutely brilliant in their first full year of 7-aside.

The day started gloomy and wet but with the smell of bacon the parents pushed on through to finally get the gazebos up!

The Oldham tournament was always going to be hard and to loose a semi by 1 goal was very unlucky. The girls all worked very hard with a special mention to Tyrene Karim who worked tirelessly at GD!

Well done girls - bring on Ribble Valley
